Tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see
You walkin' on the back roads
By the rivers flowin' gentle on my mind

      - Glen Campbell

In addition to posts that inform the JT68 website of the loss of members and guests, over the years we have also posted messages about the loss of members of a classmate's family, former teachers, and others of importance to our lives.  This page has been set up so that these notices are more easily accessed.

A common theme for our group in discussing how we feel about the death of a loved one becomes tangible when one looks back on these posts: All have touched on the bond that remains behind after loved ones depart this mortal coil.

Although death separates us physically, faith and love bind us eternally to them in so many special ways. Though we cannot see them, we know that they are still with us in spirit; though we cannot touch them, we can still feel the warmth of their smile.

Thus as we begin a new chapter in our lives when another life reaches its final chapter, we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits, and touched our hearts.

If anyone has word of the passing of a classmate, one of their family members, or a person of importance to our class, please use the Contact Us link and send us that information.  We will use your information to find the obituary (if there is one) and to locate any reliable information regarding the deceased.

We have always relied on our classmates to make us aware of these events.  You are a main source of information and we appreciate all the help you have provided throughout the years.

Mr. Ivy was a fireman. He was stationed at the firehouse on North Broadway across from Roberts Jr Hi and the park. They lived next door to us on West Cedar St. My Brother and sisters walked to St Gregory on College with me. Steve Cooney who had the most amazing singing voice was in my class. Our 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Cooney but not related to Steve.

We moved away following my father's army career. When we moved back I went to JTHS and there was Larry Ivy and his brothers and sister. Larry was a year ahead of me and Cooney. Carl was my age.

He was a quiet, thoughtful and compassionate man who subtly shared his faith, knowledge, and gift of “knowing” with others far and wide. As hospital board member Alma Williams-Howard put it, "He asked for nothing, but gave so much."

Our condolences to Pat Brasfield Bethancourt on the death of her mother and our former John Tyler teacher, Jacquelyn Brasfield on August 19, 2018.

“Jackie”, was born January 5, 1934 to John and Margaret Harden and passed away on August 19, 2018.  After a lengthy career in teaching including coaching volleyball in Van, leading the Blue Brigade and Cheerleaders at John Tyler High, and serving home bound students at Brownsboro, Jackie retired.  She moved to Kerrville for 5 years and then spent her final years in College Station, Texas.

She was a free spirit, a drummer, a race car driver, a joker, and a lover of laughter.  She was loved by her family and her friends, for whom she gave her all.  A teacher, a mentor and an adventurer, she was always ready to move on to a new experience, new friends, and a new life, of which she had so many.

Never giving up on a soul, she spent her spare hours visiting students who had gone astray, giving them hope and guidance for a future.  She taught her children compassion for all and to always remember that there, but for the grace of God, go I.  Having taught for countless years, a dinner out in Tyler was usually interrupted by, “Ms. Brasfield, I’m sure you don’t remember me”, at which point she would, in turn, interrupt, “Oh, yes I do.”

I told Dr. Whitt in an email a couple of years ago that my two favorite memories of his 7th grade Texas history class was that for “punishment”, he would make people hold books with their arms extended. It always ended in laughter. And one day he asked Betty Moffitt to tell him the difference in the Senate and House of Representatives. Betty’s wit was nearly as dry as his, and she looked up a him and said, “They’re spelled different.”

If anyone remembers Barry Mayo from a grade behind us, he past away last night as a result of a Motorcycle accident on State Park Hwy and I-20.

From the JT69 website, Barry Mayo's In Memoriam page:

"Barry was on his motorcycle and a car pulled out in front of him.  He took the bike down to avoid a hit but some how he did not make it.
DPS officials say that the preliminary crash investigation has revealed that an unknown Ford Expedition pulling a utility trailer turned onto FM 14 from a private driveway. The driver of the Ford failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle, a 2006 Harley Davidson being driven by Mayo.
The Ford Expedition did not make contact with the the motorcycle. However, the motorcycle laid down and skidded on its side, traveling southbound on FM 14. DPS says they do not know which direction the SUV went after the incident, and also do not know whether the driver knew what had happened."

Yesterday, our neighbor Phil across the street and 3 houses up, was killed in a head on collision.  Small consolation it wasn’t his fault.  Today would have been his 80th birthday.  The Cove folks are already grieving the soon to be fact that another dear neighbor, Bill, will die in the next few days.  Bill lives directly across the street.  He lost his beloved wife Hester just a month before we arrived at Saturday Cove.  Bill is a large man and arthritic as well.  Since getting to know him I always carried his groceries in – I could do in one trip that which would take him possibly four trips up and down steps.  I like Bill … interesting man with a loud laugh, a big smile, a twinkle in his eye and a greeting for everyone.

Last Thanksgiving he had to go into the hospital for pneumonia when they discovered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  He began chemo and just in March was in remission.  However, the last few weeks he was becoming weaker.  Neighbor Dana and I had to pick him up out of the yard a couple of times.  Last week he got the news that the lymphoma is back with a vengeance.  He opted to try stronger chemo even though his doctor said it was only a 20% chance that it would buy him time.  Again Dana and I assisted several days in getting him in and out of the car and house for his appointments.  His legs simply had no strength left.

Today they began hospice.

I know death is a fact of life, but two so close by is heartbreaking.  Thanks for listening.

Our condolences to Gerhard on the loss of his Tyler Dad, Tom Mallory.

A lifelong resident of Smith County, Thomas Earl Mallory, 89, passed away peacefully Nov. 21, 2013, at The Hospice of East Texas.

During World War II he served in the Eighth Army Air Force in England and, decades later, attended several 486th bomb group reunions, including one this fall. He and wife of 66 years, Betty, were longtime members of Wesley Unit-ed Methodist Church. Many knew him as a barber for decades and owner of Tom's Barber Shop. He was also widely known as a western swing musician. Music became his passion as a boy, playing guitar to his dad's fiddle at house parties during the Depression. As a teenager he played guitar and sang with local musicians who later became country legends.

After retirement, Tom formed a band, which still plays as the Texas Swingers, in which he played until his recent illness. He was never happier than when on stage. The pinnacle of his musical career came in May when he was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. In music, family, church and country, Tom Mallory's was a life well lived.

Passing of Larry Larison

Larry Larison was born on February 15, 1937 to George Charles and Ella Walker Larison in the front bedroom of the family’s farm house in the Pine Springs Community. He passed away in his farm home, a short distance away on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the age of seventy-five.

When he was forty-three years old he wrote these words: “I believe in a love of family and community possibly at the expense of greater financial rewards. To remain in a home area environment with good people who believe in sharing, helping one another, and living a good life through hard work is and shall be my goal.” And thus he lived…
He was an active participant in his education from Tyler High School 1955 Senior Class President and Rotary Award winner to yell leader at both TJC and SFA, where he earned his college degrees. He began his teaching career in 1961. In August, 1964, he married Martha Hayden who he met while both of them were teachers at Boulter Junior High. In the summers for many years, he taught swimming at Camp Tejas and was the Director of Vacation Bible School.

Paula Stephenson Jackson added: Those of us girls who had Homemaking in the 8th grade at Boulter shared vicariously the romance of our adorable    23 yr old teacher,  Martha Hayden and the handsome Larry Larison.   She cooed whenever she spoke of him and later - in our 9th grade Homemaking class - she shared all the details of their wedding.    They were sheer perfection.

Last night, Anneliese's 93 year old aunt, Tante Rita, died in a hospital in Germany. On Wednesday, she had just finished lunch with her nephew and niece (her goddaughter who was named after her) and had been talking and laughing with them. The nephew went to the bakery for some cake, and when he came back he found that Tante Rita had suffered a stroke. She had immediately slipped into a coma, fell over to her right and was being held up by the younger Rita, her niece, as they sat at the table.
She was taken to the hospital within an hour but they said there was no hope and that it was just a matter of a day or so before she passed away. As nearly all people are in Germany and most of Europe, she will be buried in a nice wooden coffin with brass handles. She will be buried beside her mother in the local graveyard and her nieces, nephews, and relatives will provide her with a grave marker.

Received The Call this morning - Aunt Pat is at peace and smiling with her husband Dick.

FYI - I just talked to Pat's daughters.  They are having manicures and pedicures (their mom would appreciate that) and in honor of their mom went to El Charro's for lunch - one of Pat's all time favorites! Pat was an aunt by marriage but she was the glue that held the family together - quietly and with strength.  Fitting that she should go last - her work is done!

A celebration of the life of Patricia J. "Pat" Reeves, 81, Tyler, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 4, 2010, in Tyler.
Pat was born May 26, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Charles and Anne Hodgson. She was a Girl Scout in her youth, a Girl Scout leader and stayed involved with the delivery of Girl Scout cookies for many years. She was a homemaker and a devoted Christian who cared for others.

"There are people God places on this Earth to be nurturers, the caregivers. Pat was one of these individuals. She did so quietly and with great strength. Her family draws comfort, secure in the knowledge that she is at peace and at last joined again with her beloved husband, her mother and father, and the extended family who preceded her. It is fitting that Pat is the last to pass of that generation of this family. Her earthly work is done. All is well."

It was on this date that Jeanette Womack posted the sad news of Maggie's passing, ending her brave fight against cancer. On the day Maggie died, Jeanette wrote on the website, “I will miss that little girl but she is probably running down the streets of heaven and asking a zillion questions and getting answers.  I love that!”

Maggie Lane Cobb, 10, of Texarkana, Texas, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 peacefully at her home in Texarkana, Texas. Maggie Cobb was born, August 3, 1999 in Texarkana, Texas. Maggie was an honor student at Pleasant Grove Intermediate School. She possessed a tremendous appetite for learning. She earned her black belt in Taekwando, loved to play soccer, spend time with her family and read.

The day before Maggie died, Jeanette wrote: Beckie, I know that God patiently waited for Maggie and is just preparing her family for her new home.  When she gets to heaven she will be surrounded with books, American girl dolls, and Spongebob!  She has been such an inspiration.  I know her family would want me to thank everyone for their prayers.  Reeves, I agree that my prayers have increased by volumes over the past years.

After hearing of Maggie's new journey....

I am remembering some special times after the loss of my loved ones.  Getting through those first several days and nights were very difficult and wanting to see their sweet faces and hear their voice or smell their familiar body scent.  I always looked up to the skies/heaven and would always see their smiles and hear their voices and know they were in God's care and at eternal rest.  Comfort and peace would always calm me.

Tonight, Jimmy and I went to the other side of the lake for dinner and again experienced some strong sensations in just a couple of hours  .... feeling this was the welcome for little Maggie.

Strong Hard Rain .... the flowing tears of sadness, but also for the joy of the new journey.

Scattered Lightning .... the celebration of fireworks welcoming her to heaven.

Loud Thunder .... the drum roll announcing her to heaven.

Calm, Peaceful, Still Waters ...  she is at eternal rest of peace and comfort.  ALL IS OK.

Magnificent Sun Rays Shining through Beautiful Floating Clouds ....she is definitely welcomed, loved, and cared for by so many.

Pretty Pink and Blue Clouds with Golden Sun Rays .... she is already helping with heavenly designs for us to remember her always.  ........ BREATH-TAKING!

Prayers, Peace, and Love to all ....

This was posted by an acquaintance and I thought it worth sharing:

"My mother passed away 24 years ago on Mothers Day. She was 58 years old and had an undiagnosed connective tissue disorder much like Lou Gehrig's disease and MS.

My most lasting and poignant memory of her was made on one raw, cold, windy March morning when I was about 10 years old. She had been attempting to mop the bare wooden floors in our house and her many children kept running in from outside, tracking muddy feet across the floors with each trip. On one particular sashay through the house, I heard a strange sound. I discovered her kneeling behind the wood-burning heater, softly praying for each of us kids. I stood and listened for a moment, then slowly backed out of the room, changed forever with the force of a mother's love.

She died with what she brought with her in the way of worldly goods...nothing. But she had built up such a storehouse of love that she was rich beyond measure in the eyes if all who knew her.

I'm sure, though, that she is now enjoying all of the richness of God's Kingdom now and forever.

I love you, Mama."

Condolences to Robbie Ott on loss of husband

Harry John Ott Jr., 62, of Tyler, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler. In October 1967 he married Robbie, the love of his life, and had a son, David, and daughter, Lindsay.
Harry served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1970-1972 in the First Cavalry Airmobile. Before retiring in 2008, Harry worked for the Coca-Cola Company for 18 years, during which time he traveled to more than 130 countries and never met a stranger.

Harry loved his church family, his friends and especially his grandson, Sam, who brought so much joy to his life.

Tommy Johnson wrote: Robbie, I just wanted to extend my condolences to you and your family. I don't know whether you knew this or not but I first met Harry at our neighborhood park(Herndon Hills park) just down the street from where Harry and his family lived when we were in Elementary school. In the summers we would all meet every day for park activities, ping pong, tether ball, chess and checkers. Harry was quite the tether ball champion and we had many good laughs over his antics at the park. Please know that Jeanie and I will keep you in our prayers in the coming days......much love....

Jake wrote: Until the Fish Fry last year, I never had really sat down and talked with Harry. There was a lull while food was still being prepared, ladies were visiting and taking photos, David and his crew were busy at the fryers, and others were just enjoying the sunny view of Hideaway Lake and the fall weather.
Harry was at a table by himself, a look of contentment, maybe serenity is a better word, on his face. As soon as I sat down at his table, a big smile and a warm handshake ushered me into that oasis of calm that seemed to surround him.
I discovered you don't have to make conversation with Harry. It just happens so naturally and easily. His eyes truly sparkled, his laughter was as gentle as the lazy sunshine reflected on the lake, and you felt you were in the presence of a genuine gentleman.
Like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, as memories of the Fish Fry fade, one thing remains: Harry's smile.

Marge was retired from the Tyler ISD after many years of service. She had a lifelong love of animals, and she and husband OJ were founding members of the Tyler Obedience Club, as well as being active in the Model A Club of Tyler. Just read in the Tyler paper where Mike Oxford's mother passed away

Dorothy Lois Oxford, 79, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Hospice of East Texas HomePlace.

"Little Ma," as she was fondly called by her loved ones, held a variety of jobs. She was a switchboard operator, a waitress at the Carlton Hotel, a caregiver, and before retiring was a cashier at Martin's Mini Mart. Most of all, she worked very hard to take care of her family. Her hobbies included dancing, singing, writing poems, cooking and shopping. She could also solve a mean crossword puzzle from any newspaper or magazine. She was an avid sports fan, watching golf, baseball and her favorite tennis pro, Andre Agassi. She spent countless hours picking out just the right greeting card to give her loved ones for special occasions. She also never left any stone unturned while planning the Christmas holidays with dozens of food dishes and numerous gifts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Waynie was only 66 and died of a massive heart attack yesterday - she was the older sister of Pat Griffin (who is also deceased) who was a few years behind us at JT.
